SWING DANCING : 4-Week Balboa Series (Dreamy Balboa)

NEW dance class in CARY!!

Get excited about SWING DANCING!! Frankie Hagan and Kellie Baggett are experienced swing dancers and they’re ready to share their knowledge and love of balboa with YOU in their NEW 4-Week Balboa Dance Series (Dreamy Balboa).

WHERE: The gorgeous Premier Dance Studio in Cary located at 1817 N. Harrison Avenue (Harrison Square Shopping Center), Cary, NC 27513 (919) 461-2295. A beautiful, friendly learning environment.

WHEN: Once a week at 8:00 PM for 4-weeks starting right after the Easter Holiday in April on Tuesday nights. Class will be roughly 46 minutes in length. FIRST CLASS IS TUESDAY APRIL 2ND!

PREREQUISITES: General understanding of the basic swing dancing or ballroom is preferred. Being comfortable with a dance that has close contact is also extremely important.

DESCRIPTION: Balboa today is commonly used both as a term to describe a fusion of dances that originated in Southern California during the 1920s and 1930s, and also referring to a specific dance from that era that was the original Balboa (sometimes also referred to as Pure-Bal). The original Balboa dance is a form of swing dance that started as early as 1915 and gained in popularity in the 1930s and 1940s. It is danced primarily in close embrace, and is led with a full body connection. The art of Balboa is in the subtle communication between the lead and follow, including weight shifts, which most viewers cannot see. As a result, Balboa is considered more of a “dancer’s dance” than a “spectator’s dance”. Its exact origins are obscure, especially as most of the original Balboa dancers have since died.
Balboa is danced to a wide variety of tempos. Because the basic step takes up such a small space, Balboa can be danced to fast music (over 300 beats per minute). Balboa is also danced to slow music (under 100 beats per minute), which allows more time for intricate footwork and variations.

PRICING: Pickup classes for non-program students will be $15/class or $25/class for a couple. If you’d like to participate in the beginner series, there will be a series price available at the studio. $60 for the series or $100 for a couple. Payment canbe made in person or in advance.

Localpalooza: East Coast Swing Class

I have been wrangled into teaching one class in the east coast swing section at the Localpalooza Swing Dance event on Saturday morning at the Triangle Dance Studio in Durham. It’s a promotional feature on local area dance instructors for the Triangle Swing Dance Society. It’s also a bit of a fundraiser for this local non-profit live dance music for swing dancers organization. Registration information is below along with the class synopsis.

The difference between a beginner and intermediate dancer is subtle but revolutionary. Start on the path from “doing moves” to “dreaming with your feet.”
